Tickets for Macbeth by Theatre; Just Because are now on sale
(Fort McMurray, AB): Theatre; Just Because is proud to present the classic Shakespeare tragedy Macbeth, in partnership with Keyano Theatre! It will be playing at the Keyano Recital Theatre on May 23, 24 and 25, 2019. This post-modern exploration of Macbeth is set in a dystopian post-war society - a kingdom that was faced with the brink of total destruction.
“I think there’s a universal truth to this text,” says Justin Shaw, the play’s director. “Any time I have explored classic material, the first question I ask myself is ‘why is this text still relevant?’ In my approach to this play, I am endeavoring to reveal why a play written over four hundred years ago still needs to be told - I believe there are many rich lessons embedded in the mysteries of this text.”
The story follows a brave Scottish general named Macbeth, as he receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. Forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion, he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler while wracked with guilt and paranoia. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of madness and death.
Jenny Price, a well-known name to theatre-goers in Fort McMurray, plays Macbeth. “I am so excited to take on this challenge,” Jenny says. “Playing Macbeth is allowing me to open up and find a vulnerability that I don’t usually like to show. I am trying to come at it first through the text itself and I have been very careful to avoid watching other performances. I am hoping this will allow me to find my own genuine connection to the character, rather than just trying to copy someone else’s interpretation. Macbeth is a complex and fascinating character and I feel humbled and privileged to be granted this opportunity.”
