Limit is the Sky
The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is pleased to announce that Julia Ivanova’s documentary, Limit is the Sky, will see its Toronto premiere on May 2nd, 2019, at the On Focus retrospective at the largest documentary film festival in North America, Hot Docs.
The screening of Limit is the Sky, which follows a three-year boom-bust-fire cycle in Fort McMurray, commemorates the third anniversary since the worst wildfire and the worst natural disaster in Canada’s history devastated the capital of the oil sands.
Limit is the Sky received the Colin Low Best Canadian Feature Award at the DOXA Documentary Film Festival as well as the Multimedia Award by the Calgary Petroleum History Society in 2017. It was produced by the NFB’s North West Studio in Edmonton.
Julia Ivanova, the director, cinematographer and editor of Limit is the Sky is a Russian-Canadian filmmaker. She came to Canada at the age of 30, became a filmmaker and captured Canada from within but with the ability to look at the country from a distance. She made ten documentaries for the NFB, CBC, Knowledge Network, played Sundance and won many awards for her films.
Ivanova is available for interviews. She lives in Vancouver, B.C.
The Hot Docs Focus On retrospective of her work includes the world premiere of Ivanova’s new film, My Dads, My Moms and Me, a film about joy and turmoil of parenting in the modern family – including same-sex partners, surrogates, adoption, and combinations that break the old conventions. And there is a unique twist. The film follows three families, filmed twice, twelve years apart – in 2007 and in 2019.
“Julia Ivanova is a bright light in the Canadian documentary world,” says Shane Smith, director of programming at Hot Docs. “Her adventurousness and passion as a filmmaker, coupled with her acute ability to connect with her subjects and draw out their stories with great insight, is nothing short of remarkable. Julia is a fearless filmmaker and we’re so pleased to showcase her work at this year’s Festival.”
