Fort McMurray Marathon to Showcase Fort McMurray’s Prestigious Trail Systems

(1 Vote)

The organizing committee of the Fort McMurray Marathon is pleased to announce the much anticipated route for the event taking place on Sunday, September 16. The Fort McMurray Marathon is a partnership between the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) and the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC).

“We are just under four months away from the Fort McMurray Marathon and we know these maps are the next piece in ensuring our runners can continue to train hard for this event!” said Kelsey Stefanizyn, Fort McMurray Marathon Organizing Committee Event Chair and Sales and Events Senior Manager of the RRC. “Race day is always full of excitement and the city is sure to be buzzing even more this year with energy from runners and spectators. Building on last year’s route, the extended course has been designed to create an enhanced participant and spectator experience, as well as showcase much of Fort McMurray’s natural beauty. We look forward to ensuring a great race day for all.”

The race will begin and end at MacDonald Island Park where spectators will cheer on marathon finishers as they receive their medals. Winding its way through the city on a spectacularly scenic course, the route will take runners through the Thickwood Trail system and into residential areas of Wood Buffalo, crossing through Thickwood Boulevard and into the Birchwood Trails. As the route has now grown to a full 42.2KM distance, an increasing number of residential homes and businesses will open their streets and pathways to the runners, which presents residents of Fort McMurray with the opportunity to come out and cheer on marathoners close to home. Event organizers are encouraging neighbourhoods to get involved, with lawn signs and their very own cheer sections this year.

The Fort McMurray Marathon includes a Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10 km, 5 km and 3 km road races and a Kid’s Fun Run. The event, formerly a Half Marathon, has received wide community support with hundreds of participants taking part on an annual basis.

A new feature this year available to participants is an interactive route map that provides detailed views of each route, including elevations, aid stations and amenities located along each course. Maps and Fort McMurray Marathon registration can be accessed online at fortmcmurraymarathon.ca. Participants and community members are invited to visit the Fort McMurray Marathon Facebook page at facebook.com/fortmcmurraymarathon for updated information on the event.
