Doug Barnes Cabin expansion underway with groundbreaking ceremony
Spring is well underway but winter activities were top of mind as the Doug Barnes Cabin expansion project kicked off today with a groundbreaking ceremony.
The Cabin, operated on behalf of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo by the Ptarmigan Nordic Ski Club since 1977, is a hub for winter adventures and access to the popular Birchwood Trails.
“Doug Barnes Cabin is a well-loved community treasure,” said Mayor Don Scott. “This project will ensure that the facility is not only better able to serve the recreational needs of community groups but will open up new opportunities for all residents.”
With decades of growth and an increasing desire for winter activities, users have outgrown the current cabin. The new building expansion will attach to the existing cabin to ensure the historic building and its distinct culture are maintained. When complete, the cabin will accommodate more people with additional functionality, including more programming opportunities and storage space.
Construction begins this month with the expansion opening in January 2019.
