4th Annual Servus Spring Food Drive brings in much needed donations
The 4th Annual Servus Spring Food Drive took place this past weekend with the goal of raising funds and food donations for families across the Wood Buffalo region, ensuring no one goes hungry this spring and summer. Once again Fort McMurray residents came together to prove that they are the most giving and supportive community.
Over the course of two days from Saturday, April 14th to Sunday, April 15th, volunteers were stationed at all local grocery stores in Fort McMurray, as well as Walmart and the Anzac Grocery store, collecting donations for the Wood Buffalo Food Bank (WBFB). The weather fortunately warmed up for the weekend, and spirits were high as the volunteers handed out lists and bags to shoppers coming into the stores.
The 2018 Servus Spring Food Drive raised a grand total of $25,657.95 in monetary donations, and 55,052 pounds of food, surpassing this years’ food goal and coming very close to their cash goal. With the continued demand in need that the WMFB faces monthly, this is an incredible success and will help to continue providing services through the next few months.
“We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers who stepped up this past weekend to help cover truck shifts and assist us in the warehouse,” saysArianna Johnson, Executive Director of the WBFB. “With a very busy weekend in our community coupled with the decrease in population, we found it significantly harder to fill our volunteer shifts this year, so we greatly appreciate those who came out to support their local community. Many of our long term and new volunteers took on last minute and extra shifts. The success of this and any of our events is due largely in part to the people who come out and give of their time,” Johnson added. “Without the generosity of this community the ever-growing number of families utilizing our services would struggle that much more to achieve nutrition and food security.”
Thank you to all those who donated; it is with your generosity that we will be able to feed those families in Wood Buffalo who are in need. We want to extend a huge thank you to Servus Credit Union for their long term and continual support of our work as Title Sponsor of the Spring Food Drive. The financial support coupled with the manpower they bring to our event is proof of their commitment to this community. A huge thank you to Hertz Car and Truck Rental for coming on as this years’ new Vehicle Sponsor and providing all the trucks, SUVs and cube van. Thank you to Tim Hortons for joining us as the new Volunteer Snack & Refreshment Sponsor ensuring that all of our hard-working volunteers have something warm to drink and a snack to make it through their sometimes chilly shifts. Thank you to Devco for our banners and signage, and to 91.1 The Bridge for being our media sponsor once again and helping us spread the word. We can’t express enough how much of an impact the community makes on the success of this event, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your ongoing support.
