Siblings Battle Cancer Together

(0 votes)

The last thing any parent would want to see is a hospital door labelled with two of their children’s names, but that is the unfortunate reality for Liliane Hajjar and Jason Randell.

14-year-old Jacob Randell and his 5-year-old sister, Sophia, are two lovely children, who have been battling cancer most of their lives. When Jacob was 5, he was diagnosed with a rare aggressive brain cancer called “atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumour” or AT/RT, which doctors found is hereditary. This finding led the entire family to get tested for the mutated gene. 7-year-old Liam was negative but Sophia tested positive. She was monitored from birth with regular MRI’s and ultrasounds and was ultimately diagnosed with the same cancer as Jacob when she turned 5.

After rigorous treatments the family began doing better. Jacob beat his brain cancer, and Sophia’s tumor had reduced substantially, but earlier this month that changed. Jacob was diagnosed with kidney carcinoma, and Sophia’s tumor has returned. Both children are now sharing a room in the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa while their Mom, Liliane, and Dad, Jason, sit supportively by their sides.

If there is anything Fort McMurray knows how to do, it’s rally behind a good cause, and now it’s our turn to help this deserving family. A group of caring Fort McMurray-ites have planned a Fundraiser for April 20th at Townhall Public House. Doors open at 7:00pm and all proceeds raised will be donated to the Radnell family. Please come down to Townhall and help in anyway you can, to support this struggling family.
