30 Years Old

Class of 2021

Keyano Theatre Company’s resident Stage Manager Zachary L. Barrett is immersed in Fort McMurray’s art community.

A mentor for the Arts and Culture committee for the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Youth (MACOY), he recently chatted with YMM about how working in the arts field is something he started, and hasn’t looked back from.

YMM: What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

ZB: A few years ago I had a very stable job.  An opportunity arose for me to stretch my skills in management and more directly help the Arts Community itself, so I took it.  Still seems to be working out so far!

YMM: What accomplishment are you most proud of?

ZB: I’m amazed that to this day, once I started getting work in the arts field, I’ve yet to take on jobs that aren’t in my field.  Between personal projects and helping the arts community, I’m happy about that.

YMM: What is the most rewarding part of your career?

ZB: Growing up I swore to myself I would tell stories based on hobbies I had.  Tabletop role playing primarily.  That collaborative storytelling always got me excited, and now my Production Company Twisted Gears Studios is into its 4th year doing just that and even had one of our shows accepted into the first ever Podcast Festival for independent content.  Very exciting.

YMM: Tell us about your volunteer experience in the community.

ZB: Most of my contracts the past five years have been with Keyano Theatre Company as their resident Stage Manager organizing all the volunteers and resources that go into one of their productions as well as their youth play series for the past seven years.

Film projects have included large projects such as Nerdvana: The Web Series and writing/hosting the 2020 Wood Buffalo Arts Awards.  Our company also works to produce the broadcasts for The Husky’s games down at Keyano College.  Some creative endeavors include two podcasts, The Call and Spacers, the former of which is currently being evaluated for up to four awards in the US.

YMM: For what are you most grateful?

ZB: My wildly impressive support system!  Starting with Elizabeth, my “Shoulda-Wife” (Wedding was postponed for global reasons), all the way to my business partner Derek Snow and the rest of my team over at Twisted Gears Studios.
