University student, and Westwood Community High School graduate, Krish Shah has an impressively long list of volunteer roles within the community.

Stating that he “just wants to make sure Fort McMurray stays thriving as always,” he sat down with YMM and chatted about what pushes him to do what he truly believes in.

YMM: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve taken on this year?

KS: This year, I’ve been working on a startup called Basch. In short, it is a way to let story-tellers tell their stories faster, which for now is through video. Although managing the startup and university at the same time is difficult, it is incredibly rewarding because exciting things happen much more frequently.

YMM: What is the best advice you have ever received?

KS: The best advice that I have received would definitely be that it’s important to make every decision in your life acknowledging that you only have a limited time left here. It taught me that life is too short to be lived with regrets, and because of that, has always pushed me to do what I truly believed in, regardless of how possible it seemed.

YMM: What would you say to your 10-year-old self?

KS: I would ask my 10-year-old self as many questions as I can. To be honest, I don’t think I would have tried to give any advice, because that would take away from all the journeys that would be yet to come. Instead, I’d try and figure out what I was into back then, and how I changed compared to now. Hopefully 10-year-old Krish would also tell me some fun stories from back then, just to reminisce.

YMM: Describe your perfect day in YMM.

KS: My perfect day in YMM is just to go out and about, enjoying everything the community has to offer. Specifically, I’d probably start out the day with a walk in the trails, followed by going home to work on whatever it is that I am working on. In the evening, I might go out to play basketball at the St. Anne outdoor basketball court, or maybe hit the sand dunes (I’ve never been there yet). At night, I’d gather with some friends and go to the tunnel in Parsons Creek; I’ve created some of my best memories there.

YMM: For what are you most grateful?

KS: I’m definitely grateful for having a supportive and ambitious group of people always around me. I wouldn’t be who I was without my family and friends that I’ve made here. I’ve noticed that Fort McMurray has a community that will stop at nothing to continue pushing you forward to achieve your greatest dreams.
