Class of 2021

Inspired by Marie Forelo who said, “Don’t be afraid of failure, be afraid of not trying in the first place,” Andrew Gorman is an active volunteer in the community, chairing a weekly PTSD peer support group for first responders, emergency service members, police, fire fighters, military and veterans.

He also volunteers for the Wood Buffalo Food Bank throughout the year, as well as on the First Responder’s Golf Tournament committee. Andrew spoke with YMM about his passion for mental health advocacy and his time in the military.

YMM: What three words best describe you?

AG: Dependable – I will always be there for my friends and family when they need me the most.  Easy-going – I am very easy to get along with despite differences in opinions or beliefs. Hardworking – I am always willing to put in the long hours, or difficult work to get things done

YMM: What is something people are always surprised to learn about you?

AG: People are always surprised to learn that I served in the military and that I was injured in Afghanistan.

YMM: Who is your hero?

AG: My heroes are all the men and women who serve in our military, work on the front line as a police officer, fire fighter, nurse, doctor or first responder who continually sacrifice themselves for the betterment of the country or community they live in. Those who selflessly put others first before the needs of themselves!

YMM: What motivates you?

AG: I have a tattoo on my left wrist which reads “Make Them Proud.”  I try to live each day to the fullest, keeping in mind the ultimate sacrifice my friends made overseas and attempting to make them proud with my daily actions.

YMM: What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

AG: The biggest risk I have ever taken would be becoming completely vulnerable and sharing my story with others.  My thoughts are that if my story can help ensure someone else doesn’t end up where I have been, my life has been a success.
