Putting Down Roots with Dunvegan Gardens

(1 Vote)

DUNVEGAN GARDENS IS A FAMILY-OWNED AND OPERATED BUSINESS THAT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR 62 YEARS, MAKING THE ART OF BEAUTIFYING OUR REGION THEIR BUSINESS.

“Our family moved to the region in the fall of 1952, and quickly got used to the hard work and long hours that were needed in order to plant, water, fertilize, hoe and harvest our vegetable crops successfully,” shares Brad Friesen. “Eventually my father and two uncles began purchasing greenhouses. We’ve been putting what we learned from them into our businesses ever since.”

With garden centres, greenhouses, tree nurseries, market gardens, gift shops and landscaping, the Friesen family has become firmly established as the go-to experts when growing living things in our northern backyards.

Over 30,000 square feet of greenhouse features hanging baskets, potted plants, tropical house plants, garden furniture, gardening tools, fertilizer and annuals; they have everything you need to make your yard your own personal oasis.

For YMMers who need more than just the right plants and tools to transform their yard in the perfect escape, the Landscaping division at Dunvegan Gardens is available to put their expertise to work on creative solutions for landscaping projects.

With lawn maintenance and landscape construction, including sod installation, seeding, retaining wall construction, playground installation, contract hauling, masonry work, grade finishing, tree and shrub installation, topsoil screening and hauling, and gravel hauling, the Landscaping division will ensure you have a beautiful outdoor retreat to enjoy. They even offer snow removal during the winter months…but let’s not even think about snow right now!

Lacking a green thumb, or the time or space available to commit to growing fruits and vegetables? Dunvegan Gardens grows crops for the fresh market, where you can buy fresh produce…and nobody needs to know that you didn’t grow it yourself!

From July through September, garden-fresh beans, beets broccoli, cabbage, (green/red), carrots, cauliflower, corn, cucumbers, onions, parsnips, peas, peppers, potatoes, radishes, tomatoes, strawberries and wide variety of squash (pumpkin, spaghetti and zucchini) are available.

Delicious fresh food like this is also benefiting local non-profits, such as the Wood Buffalo Food Bank.

“The Food Bank is our top charity,” explains Brad. “We feel that it is always in need of fresh produce and we grow plenty. The Food Bank relies on the generosity of this community, and donating fresh food is a way for us to help out.”

With a passion for the community, giving back is important to them. “We help to beautify the city through work projects and donations to local charities,” says Brad. “Dunvegan Gardens as a family likes to give back to the community that supports us. We feel that this is very important.”
