You have probably heard before that Small Businesses are crucial to the Canadian economy, but what exactly does that mean? What is it about small businesses that make them so important? In fact, small businesses employ almost 71% of the Canadian working population and makeup 97.9% of the businesses in Canada.  And did you know that small businesses account for 42% of the Canadian GDP? Small businesses are actually the backbone of our economy. The impact of small businesses is too big to ignore.

To celebrate the contribution that small businesses have on our economy the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce has commenced its annual Shop Local Passport Program.  Participation is simple. For every ten dollars you spend at a participating business you get a stamp on your passport. Once your passport is completed you can enter a draw where you can win $1,000, $500 or $250 in McMurray Money. McMurray Money is a Chamber gift card that can only be redeemed at businesses that are participating in the program.

We understand the impact that local businesses have on our community. These businesses tend to be the groups that donate their time and invest their funds in our community. They sponsor those social profit events and coach the sports teams. They are invested in seeing our communities thrive and succeed. In turn, we can support them by purchasing our goods and services locally when we have the opportunity. To get your passport and to find out the complete list of participating businesses you can visit the Chamber's website fortmcmurraychamber.ca

The Fort McMurray Chamber has been a strong advocate for Wood Buffalo businesses since its inception as the Fort McMurray Board of Trade in 1912. We are here for business and we will continue to provide value to our membership through value-added programs, events and through the creation of policy surrounding important business issues which we will lobby to the municipal, provincial and federal governments. We are here for business because we do believe that all businesses play an integral role in making a community a great place to live, work and play. Small businesses are too big to ignore. Instead, we will celebrate their successes and help support them in any way we can.
