Tom Keca’s legacy as a local hockey coach started at a young age after his family moved to Fort McMurray. Some of his favourite childhood memories were watching the Oil Barons play. He was destined to join them.
Playing in all levels of Fort McMurray’s minor league, Tom eventually got to put on the same blue and yellow jersey as worn by local NHL legends Chris Phillips and Scott Upshall when he entered the Alberta Junior Hockey League in 1991. A quarter of a century following, Tom became head coach and general manager for the team.
Now in the present day, Tom is bringing his more than 13 years of experience with Barons to Keyano College to help them re-establish their Huskies Men’s hockey program after its cut in April 2016. He is currently working on the bid to deliver to Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference with plans to not only bring back the men’s league but to also add a women’s hockey program for the 2020-2021 season.
