What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Venture outside your comfort zone as often as possible; facing your fears with courage and tenacity is the surest way to continue growing into a better person each and every day.
“A ship in a harbour is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.”
Twenty-eight-year-old Benjamin Martin was born and raised in Hickman’s Harbour, Newfoundland to parents who raised him with strong values, and with an unstoppable belief in him.
It was his father who taught Ben to skate, putting him on the path to passionately playing sports. Dedicating hours to improving in all the sports he participated in, he continued into university, realizing he had developed an intense passion for coaching and training others in sports.
So when he arrived in Fort Chipewyan as a teacher less than four years ago, it was natural for Ben to become the head coach of minor hockey, as well as various other sports and recreation programs. Since 2015 he has been dedicated to making lasting contributions towards improving the quality of life for the youth, and community, of Fort Chipewyan.
“Being a part of the community of Fort Chip for the past three and a half years means the world to me,” Ben says. “The personal growth I have experienced is hard to put into words. The sincerity and genuineness of the people have changed my life forever.”
