Ben Farrington is a young and talented golfer, who recently graduated from Father Mercredi High School, and now attends college in Texas on a full-ride golf scholarship. Ben moved to Fort McMurray when he was in kindergarten, and started golfing at Fort McMurray Golf Club with his dad. Ben fell in love with golf, and his natural talent for the sport was immediately apparent to all. Ben’s determination to strengthening his golf skills – particularly as a child – was unique. By the age of 10, Ben secured a spot on Team Canada at the US Kids Junior World Golf Championships in North Carolina – and this is no easy feat, considering that Ben is limited to playing golf outdoors more than his competitors because of the cold climate of Fort McMurray. Ben enjoyed a successful junior golf career; he was named to Team Alberta for three consecutive years, and played twice at the Canadian Junior Championships. This past summer, Ben was one of five Canadians selected to the Junior World Championship, playing at Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego, made famous by the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
While Ben’s golf talent continued to take him all over Canada and the world to tournaments and he was scouted by American schools where he could golf year-round, he always remained rooted in his passion and pride for his home in Fort McMurray. He attributes the most influential people in his life to his supportive family, school teachers, and his coach Robert Glanville from Miskanaw Golf Club, who always challenged him to be his best self.
Ben says the best things about Fort McMurray are the incredible people who live here, the world-class facilities, and the great community sports programs. Ben’s future plans are to continue to play college golf in the US and earn a business degree, with many frequent visits to his home and family in Fort McMurray!
