MICHAEL MANKOWSKI

Profession: Filmmaker
Age: 30 • Years in Wood Buffalo: 30

Rescuer of two baby grizzly bears, he learns the most from making his own mistakes.

30-year-old Michael Mankowski is an accomplished screenplay writer, graduate of the University of Lethbridge’s faculty of management, and co-founder of Wood Buffalo Productions. He manages day-to-day client relations, and is actively involved throughout Wood Buffalo Production’s creative process.

Recently nominated for the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce 2016 Artpreneur Award, he was also nominated in 2015 for the Heart of Wood Buffalo Leadership Award.

Michael is a proud member of the community, and is committed to its betterment. Having volunteered his time to the United Way, Salvation Army, and Waypoints, he has also offered video services for worthy causes and charitable fundraisers.

Working in the community where he grew up, Michael feels blessed as a filmmaker for the opportunities he has been given. He credits the support of community for enabling him to get better at his craft.

Michael, when not working, is extremely passionate about all things yoga, movies, photography, comics, wine, and the third wave of coffee.

Michael’s commitment to making films locally, and ultimately helping to put Fort McMurray on the map for filmmaking, are just part of what has landed him a spot on YMM’s Top 50 Under 50.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: “From a modest beginning as a fledgling filmmaker a few years ago, to where I am today, I have been on quite a ride!”
