The heat is HERE! And just in time for patios to re-open!!
Keyano Theatre is coming back and making plans for their 2021-2022 season. When you come back - you'll notice a new look to the main theatre as they have installed new seating aisles to help break up the rows. Kudos to the staff who worked hard making the new changes.
June is Recreation and Parks Month and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo staff are working hard hoping to win the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge. The RMWB has created an Activity Card to help your family explore the more than 814 hectares of parks and green spaces and 135-kilometre trail system in our region
Congratulations to Aarsuhi Vasal from Westwood High School Fort McMurray and Sai Shankar from École McTavish High School on medaling this month in the Canada Wide Science Fair. Aarushi won a bronze medal in the Excellence Award category for a project on yeast in bioremediation. Sai won a silver and the Youth Can Innovate Award for a mobile photosensitivity warning system designed for Epileptics.
The Fort McMurray Marathon is coming back! Look for more information in the coming weeks in preparation for their event in September. Organizing are hoping to feature both a full and half marathon as well as a 10km, 5km, 3km and Kid's Fun Run.
Shoutout to the crews who have been working on the exterior of the Morrison Centre the last few weeks. Taking advantage of the downtown redevelopment grant - it will be nice to see a much-needed facelift on that building.
There will be a new patio at the Royal Canadian Legion when it re-opens! They have been closed for over a year after being hit hard with the flood and are excited to welcome back guests soon. They are also holding a 50/50 draw, a concert with the amazing Julian Austin on August 7th and a poker run on August 8th
The JSYF (JUSTIN SLADE YOUTH FOUNDATION) are holding their annual Golf Tournament and Silent Auction Friday, August 13th at Miskanaw featuring a Hole In One Challenge with a free vehicle from Legacy Dodge.
Landmark Cinemas Fort McMurray has officially confirmed they will be re-opening next Thursday, June 10th! It is expected A Quiet Place, Part II will be among the movies being shown
Is there a better way to rock out en route to the movies? 3 Fat Daddies have announced they have new music being released, also next Thursday.
The Miskanaw Golf Club has a brand new restaurant in town as their clubhouse has rebranded as Seventy Two Kitchen & Patio! Can't wait to check it out
The owner of Nova Scotia's Fresh Lobster - Fort McMurray, unfortunately, had his personal vehicle catch on fire this week so he could use a little extra support. He's open every weekday during the day (10:30 - 4:15) outside Pizza 73 downtown and from 4:30-6:00 outside St. Paul's parking lot in Thickwood.
Big shoutout to Fort McMurray Girl Gang for choosing the CMHA as their charity to donate proceeds from their merch sales for this month! Thank you for recognizing the importance of what we do in the community!
Regional Emergency Services are promoting fire safety in homes this month. If you live in the Thickwood neighbourhoods of Woodland, Castle Ridge, Duncan or Cornerbrook you may be eligible to receive a new smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. Visit the RMWB's website for more.
The Northern Lights Health Foundation will be getting a physician training site. It will be a residency site for the University of Alberta's family medicine residency training program. where students could complete their training within the RMWB.
Lots of great initiatives happening right now in response to the devastating discovery in Kamloops. Listening to Ron Quintal from McMurray Métis talking about residential schools and what the next steps are on Mix 103.7 FM McMurray Matters this week was a tough but necessary listen.
Sad news from Keyano as their annual Gala has once again been cancelled but will return in 2022. However, their golf tournament will go forward as a fundraiser for the Huskies Athletics at Keyano College on September 24th.
Two great Fort McMurray residents will be representing us on provincial boards. Jennifer Turner from Fort McMurray Public School Division will be on the Child and Youth Well-Being Review Panel and Kristi Pinkney Hines who already represents us as Vice Chair of Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce will now be joining the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Executive Committee.
97.9 Rock’s Ben Maddigan has been holding a heated competition for the best burger in town. The final four has come down to EVP, Zee Bar and Grill, 57 North and the Tavern On Main – go vote next week!
We talked last week about the amazing work Melissa Gladue is doing for a local senior’s garden. It turns out Canadian Tire caught wind of the story and came through with a huge donation!! That is awesome!!
The Fort McMurray SPCA no longer require appointments if you’re going in to visit the animals! They’re also looking to hire TWO summer students (must be 18+) - which is a dream summer job for animal lovers!
