GOOD NEWS ONLY with Mike Jones

I got my first vaccine this week! Had a lot of soreness the day after getting the AstraZeneca vaccine but also heard from several people who didn’t have any symptoms. I was fit as a fiddle 36 hours later – I recommend having some Tylenol and maybe some Epsom salts handy just in case! Eligibility continues to change daily – huge shoutout to all of the staff down at the walk-in clinic and throughout town helping us get back to normal as quickly as possible.

I finally got around to checking out the Fort McMurray Urban Market on Fraser Ave last weekend and couldn't have been more blown away! It looks absolutely amazing in there! Really impressed with the layout and design - it runs every Saturday and Sunday! Cool to see Firebag Coffee Company and 57 North Kitchen + Brewery selling their wares and was very impressed with Miss Lee's Spices! Bought their popcorn mix and loved it!

Cool to hear CrossFit Crude have been hosting outdoor workouts next to Town Hall!

Another sign of summer -it looks like Real Canadian Superstore downtown has their Garden Centre ready to go! There are also some amazing plants each weekend at the Urban Market.

Big shoutout to Luay S. Eljamal, Carla White and M'Guphynn Media who dropped the trailer for Sparking Creativity today! It was wonderful being a part of the virtual workshop for Carla's play and I can't wait to see the full documentary later this year!

Having car troubles? My friend Matt Lloyd is offering basic "Check Engine Light" scans in his spare time for just $20 - the best part? The money gets donated to a charity of your choice! Shoot him a message to arrange a time and location! Well done, Matt!!

FuseSocial is running a great campaign right now entitled "Faces of Social Recovery." They were set to have a community BBQ but have postponed it until case numbers can get under control. They've also launched a brief survey about tourism in the RMWB and they're looking for input on tourism experiences (Northern lights tours, winter experiences & more) and the money you would be willing to spend).

Shoutout to Fort McMurray Golf Club and Surekha's on the Snye for delivering meals to first responders this week on the anniversary of the Horse River Fire.

Wet and Wild Scuba Diving is holding a virtual Divescapes workshop next Saturday, May 15th. The event is free but donations are encouraged.

Exhale Yoga & Barre is launching a 14-day series "Coming Back To You" which will feature workshops on meditation journaling, chakra alignment and self-study & reflection. It's being offered via Zoom and current members can enjoy a 20% off discount.

We ordered pizza from The Alley YMM this week and were blown away by the size and quality of the slices! They also hooked us up with a $5 arcade credit so needless to say somebody's getting their butt whipped at Mario Kart when this is all over!  Fun fact: 18 inches is the exact width of our RMWB recycling cans!

A team of researchers from Edmonton led by Dr Vincent Agyapong continue to work on a project called the Fort McMurray Trauma Study. They are offering all FMM residents the chance to participate in an anonymous survey and a FREE 12 month daily supportive text message program that aims to provide mental health support for residents experiencing stress, anxiety, depression and PTSD. Here is the link to sign up: https://redcap.link/FMM_TraumaSurvey

I'm stoked to pick up some delicious popcorn snacks and support  Santa’s Anonymous Campaign Fort McMurray - if you haven't done so already, join the Facebook group Sweets and Treats to support Santa’s Anonymous, as they are frequently posting new delicious eats to "slightly" endanger your diet for a great cause.

KidSport Wood Buffalo have a special Mother's Day online auction right now with lots of great gifts for Mom! Check out their Facebook page for the link.

Finally, a special thank you to everyone who has reached out to congratulate me on my new position. I will miss being a part of Country 93.3 and being on the radio every day, but I can’t wait to begin as the Communications and Marketing Co-Ordinator with the Canadian Mental Health Association – Wood Buffalo on May 17th! Not to worry though, I’ll still be bringing you the Good News and more every week right here!
