It’s autumn which means Junior Boo – A Weekend of Boo is back!
It’s that time of the year again…
The crunch of leaves underfoot, the crisp earthy smell in the air, the warmth of cozy knit sweaters against your skin and the taste of pumpkin spice on your tongue. It’s autumn which means Junior Boo – A Weekend of Boo is back! This scare-tastic Halloween carnival presented by Suncor has been a staple in the Fort McMurray community for over 10 years.
It started with “Chateau Boo” Fort McMurray’s only haunted house that attracted boys and ghouls of all ages. As the years went by, it evolved into Junior Boo – a weekend carnival held inside the Fort McMurray Boys & Girls Club (FMBGC). For this annual fundraiser, many hours and volunteers transform the FMBGC Clubhouse into a spooky Halloween extravaganza. Take part in pumpkin carving, raffles, carnival games, face painting, food vendors, bouncy castles, CNRL’s tricky treat store and Pembina Pipeline’s Spooktacular Market Hall. Bring the whole family and join over 500 families in costume and for a gh’oul time.
Through sponsors and the community, all the funds raised from Junior Boo is invested back into the local youth of Fort McMurray. At the FMBGC, our mission is to provide safe and supportive places where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life. We have been established since 1981 and have 37 years of commitment to the Wood Buffalo community.
We currently serve Fort McMurray children and youth age 1-18 in the following:
- Tiny Toes Daycare, an Alberta licensed ELCC Daycare that provides affordable and holistic childcare to children age 12 months to Kindergarten.
- ZAP Out of School Care, an affordable program targeted towards children age Kindergarten to 12 years old. ZAP provides stimulating and active learning during the crucial moments outside of school such as summer break, holidays and before/after school.
- Limitless Youth, our innovative youth division that serves ages 12-21 years old with programs such as Skilled4Success (a career preparedness program), AT-SNAP (an activity and recreational program for youth with disabilities), Internships, Boccia Ball League (one of the most inclusive sports in the world) and Keystone (a leadership development program).
Our organization is constantly keeping a finger on the pulse of the community to evolve with its needs. We plan to advance our program offerings to fill the gap in Youth Mental Health, Indigenous Youth programs and Inclusive Programming within Wood Buffalo and surrounding areas.
The development and growth of our youth is something we hold dear to us because they hold the keys to a better and brighter world.
By attending, volunteering or sponsoring Junior Boo on October 27-28, we contribute towards creating opportunities for our young people. Opportunities which help them discover and achieve their dreams and grow up to be healthy, successful and active participants in society.
So this autumn, have fang-tastic fun while making a boo-tiful difference by supporting Junior Boo.
