The Chamber Report

Since its inception, the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce has been dedicated to promoting business growth and development, advocating for sound public policy, and serving its members with outstanding programs and benefits.

The Chamber of Commerce is the premier advocate of the region’s business community, representing hundreds of members across the region with one voice.

A Voice for Local Businesses

First and foremost, the Chamber exists to advocate for local business and hears the concerns of the nearly five-hundred-member business community. They are frustrated by the business closures during the COVID-19 pandemic, continuous and sometimes onerous municipal red tape that impedes their agility in responding to executing contracts or changes to their businesses.

The Chamber continues to give a unified voice to these frustrations as new approaches and strategies are being developed by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, alongside Mayor and Council.

At the Provincial level, there is a bonded unity with regional Chambers across Alberta to demand more transparency from the Government on the reopening of business amid the pandemic. Local small businesses continue to be frustrated by the lack of clear policy.

Because the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce is an affiliate of both the Alberta and Canadian Chambers, they leverage the position within these networks to help shape policies that benefit its member businesses.

A Focus on Member Engagement and Value in 2021

The Chamber has committed to focused member engagement and value in 2021. To achieve its goals, its putting focuses squarely on members through advocacy and the emphasis on membership value by committing clear communication of one-on-one engagement.

The Chamber is also actively developing new tools and initiatives to increase engagement. This includes the launch of the new Podcast series “Chamber Voices,” which features conversation and stories shared by members of the Fort McMurray Business Community.

It’s also executing monthly networking and engagement sessions featuring keynote presentations and panel discussions chosen specifically for their value to the local business community and had Premier Jason Kenney as its keynote speaker in March.

Another initiative is the creation of a new Gift Card Program. Launching in April, this program will replace McMurray Money and provide a great deal more flexibility and ease of use for both the user, and the vendor. It will include an exciting discount on the gift cards. Shopping local will be the greatest value for the Wood Buffalo region’s communities with a seamless process for its businesses.

And finally, e-commerce solutions developed for small businesses in partnership with DMS Shophere via Shopify, which will allow local businesses to have their e-commerce websites built, at no cost.
