Shane Young
Shane Young is a fixer. The owner of True Tech Appliance will actually come to your house when your fridge isn’t working and repair it, right there, while you wait. It’s such an unusual, un-21st century business idea that it feels like he should arrive along with a milkman swapping bottles on the doorstep, followed by a doctor making house calls. Yet he’s here in the throwaway capital of Canada, and although his occupation is delightfully archaic he’s been doing this in YMM for over 25 years.
How on earth did you get into this business?
During high school I worked for a guy here in town who had a second-hand shop. People would dump their appliances and I’d salvage the parts.
You started by taking things apart. How did you learn to put them back together?
I had a bit of natural ability and a lot of curiosity. When I decided this was what I wanted to do with my life I went to SAIT and became an appliance service technician.
Then if my microwave goes up in smoke you’re the guy to call.
Well if you text me or email me it’ll be quicker, then I have a record of your message. Anyway sometimes, especially with a cheap microwave, I won’t waste your money. I’ll never recommend you throw good money after bad, and if you have an appliance you can replace cheaply, I’ll tell you.
What happens if I bought good stuff and it stops working?
With the midrange to high-end appliances I can help you. If you have good brands and you’re happy with them I’ll service them and replace the worn out parts. Well made is well made, and good appliances should last 20 or more years if they’re maintained.
So you’ll come to my home and repair my stove, or fridge, washing machine, dryer, freezer, microwave, dishwasher? And if you think it’s not worth my while you’ll tell me first?
