Free news, delivered without the corporate filter that burdens traditional media, does have its price. For one, you often have to wade through racist, misogynistic crap. Also, there are the trolls. To be fair, the Fort McMurray Everything Goes Facebook page does not tout itself as a news source. With an enormous and diverse audience (over 20,000 followers at the time this magazine went to print), the Facebook page that started out as more of an online garage sale has since become a source of news – even if it’s mostly the old-timey, town gossip sort of news. Want to know if anyone else is hearing the sound of guns going off in your neighbourhood? Someone’s starting a new cupcake business? Need to call someone out for parking like a clown? Just beware that someone will criticize your grammar, and the comments will veer off into a conversation about the glory of yoga pants.
