The Tar Sand Betties
Unless your ma was into Roller Derby back in the day, you probably didn’t know much about the sport until you saw Drew Barrymore’s Whip It. And even if you’ve never considered yourself an outsider – even if you’ve lived a conventional and happy life – you identified with the rag-tag team of misfits that made up the Hurl Scouts. The bad-ass alter egos, the impossibly cool uniforms, the odd grace of gliding around on roller skates while knocking a girl down: you felt this need to participate.
Enter Tar Sand Betties – Fort Mac’s only competitive traveling roller derby team.
Established in 2010, the Tar Sand Betties run two practices each week: Fresh Meats (rookies) and Veterans. Ladies show up wearing whatever – the website specifically states “there is no ‘typical’ roller girl. Roller derby attracts women of all shapes and sizes….the bigger the booty, the bigger the block…”
If, as they say, there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women, then the Tar Sand Betties have a ticket straight to heaven. This is a crew that has each other’s back – check out any upcoming game to see what happens with a teammate gets hurt. It’s nothing short of beautiful.
Recruitment for the Summer Fresh-Meat Program starts in August. Check out tarsandbetties.com for details. You already know you wanna.
