Your McMurray Six On / Six Off
Fort McMurray: Where one person can change the community!
Off: Blah, blah, blah, Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo are so “special”. Sounds like a marketing campaign to me.
On: Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo ARE special. Just in this issue you will read about some of the remarkable people doing amazing things in our community – and that’s just a small sampling of what make this region the place it is. No marketing required!
Off: Yeah, yeah, I hear it all the time, but what makes it so special?
On: The secret is in the sauce – meaning the people of the region and our communities. It’s not the industry or the government that make this place unique – it’s the people who come here seeking the potential and opportunity.
Off: Isn’t it just like everywhere else?
On: Yes…and no. Every community is unique, but perhaps those in our region are even more so. From our First Nations communities to the urban centre in Fort McMurray, we celebrate cultural diversity and welcome people from around the world. We face challenges together, and we embrace the potential and opportunity.
Off: What makes it unique other than cultural diversity? You find that across Canada.
On: Maybe it is because we are in a northern climate, or a little bit more remote. Maybe it’s because many of us come here far from family – but whatever it is, the people of this region have a strong drive to create a community. We are a region of community builders.
Off: “Create” and “build” a community? Doesn’t one already exist?
On: It absolutely does, and the roots stretch back hundreds of years – but as the region grows every single person here has the opportunity to contribute to the development of the communities of this region and even change them for the better.
Off: Are you saying one person can make a difference?
On: Maybe that is the key aspect of Wood Buffalo that is often overlooked – this is a region where one person – one individual – can make a tremendous difference and create a significant impact. That can be hard to do in other places, but in Fort McMurray one person can change the community. And lots of “one persons” working together? Well, they can, and are, changing the future.
