There's Nothing To Do in Fort McMurray

Off: There is nothing to do in Fort McMurray.

On: You could never be more wrong on this one than in 2015. From CFL games to professional soccer, country music events, the largest rock concert in Wood Buffalo history and the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games, 2015 is THE year of “things to do in Fort McMurray.”

Off: I hear this is being called the year of sports in Fort McMurray? Boring.

On: Well, if you think seven major sporting events and thousands of memories is boring then maybe you need to look up the word “fun” in the dictionary. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has declared 2015 The Year of Sport, and for good reason. There are at least seven major sports events taking place during the year, as well as all the incredible minor sports and athletics that are part of life in the region. And sports aren’t just about the action on the field or the court; sports are all about the community.

Off: I’m not a sports fan, so 2015 has nothing for me to enjoy.

On: Do you like music? Well how about Aerosmith at Shell Place on July 19 or Doc Walker at the Wild West Country Music Festival on July 10 and 11? Or maybe you like community celebrations, so how about Canada Day? Or maybe you are a runner and would enjoy the Fort McMurray Half Marathon? Wood Buffalo in 2015 is way, way more than just sports – there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Off: What about Shell Place: just a football field, right?

On: Wrong! Shell Place is so much more than the admittedly impressive SMS Equipment Stadium! From the Social Profit Shared Space operated by anchor tenant the United Way of Fort McMurray to the Nexen CNOOC Stage to the turf field house and badminton centre, Shell Place is a multi-purpose, flexible and community-focused addition to the amazing amenities already at MacDonald Island Park.

Off: Aren’t we kind of overdoing it for 2015? I mean it’s all in one year!

On: Sure, you could look at it that way – or you could see that this is going to be an amazing adventure of a year in Wood Buffalo. There will be some challenges, and many of the events taking place this year, both the one-time events and the annual events, will be relying heavily on our volunteer core to achieve success. If any place has the energy, the enthusiasm and the excitement to make 2015 a year to remember, though, it’s Fort McMurray.

Off: Meh. I think I will go to Edmonton for summer vacation instead.

On: That’s unfortunate, because you will really miss out if you leave town this year. This isn’t just the year of sport in Wood Buffalo – it’s the perfect year for a Fort McMurray “staycation”, because there is no need to leave town to have fun. 2015 is our time to shine on a provincial and national stage – and to have a hell of a good time while doing it.
