Confessions of a Rescue Mom - Pet Holidays

(1 Vote)

Pet holidays? No not the kind your pack your pets into airline approved crates and jet off into the sky, I’m talking about ones that are held in honour of our fur family members. With being heavily involved in the pet industry I have blogged and celebrated many of them! Have you? Rolo and I are here to give you a heads up on a few pet holidays and awareness days coming up in October/November and of course how you can celebrate them.

OCTOBER:

National Walk Your Dog Week
(1st week in October)

Be sure to enjoy the fall weather with your furry family member by taking part in this walking week, maybe stop for a pumpkin spice latte on your way?

Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

The best way to honour this month is by adopting one from your local shelter of course. If you have already adopted one maybe honour yours by donating or volunteering instead. Adopting a shelter dog was the best thing I could ever do. Nothing compares to the bond Rolo & I have created over the years. #opttoadopt

Pitbull Awareness Day
(Last Saturday in Oct)

Celebrate this amazing breed. Did you know that there is a local Pitbull Awareness Group? They normally host some sort of event around this day. Visit them on Facebook: Pitbull Awareness Group ~ Fort McMurray

National Cat Day (Oct 29th)

Even though your cat should be celebrated every day, this day is in writing. Stop by your local pet store and grab some treats or a new toy. #nationalcatday

National Veterinary Technician Week (Oct 11-17th)

A week to give thanks to our amazing vet techs here in town at all the veterinary clinics. Maybe stop by with a coffee? Chocolates? Framed photo of your pet? Thank-you card? I bet they would appreciate it, after all they do so much for our furry family members.

NOVEMBER:

Pet Cancer Awareness Month

Many people do not realize that cancer is not just a human condition; it affects our pets as well. In fact, cancer is the number one disease-related killer of dogs and cats pets (credit: PetMD) I have personally lost a pet from cancer and let this month be a big reminder to check for bumps and lumps (be cautious and get them checked) as well as other possible warning signs.

Epilepsy Awareness Month
(Canine Epilepsy)

With having a dog who has Canine Epilepsy, this month is a big one for us. We love sharing stories, tips and tricks on our blog. We also wear a lot of purple! The “EPI DOG” Community is a strong knitted one; we are all there for each other. If you got an EPI dog, feel free to connect with me and I will point you in the right direction to help, friends and resources. #canineepilepsy

World Kindness Day (Nov 13th)

Celebrate world kindness day by making a difference. You could make a donation to your local animal shelter, bring by some snacks for the kennel attendants, drop by some pet items you no longer need, host a bake sale and donate proceeds…the list is endless!   #worldkindnessday

Catch up with Kimberley & Rolo as they blog every weekday for their local pet blog, Confessions of a Rescue Mom (confessionsofarescuemom.com), and be sure to follow them on Twitter: @rescuemomblog and Instagram: rescuemomblog.

KIMBERLEY MATCHEM & ROLO

Kimberley, a lover of all things animal, was born and raised in Merritt, British Columbia.  In 2006, at the age of only 19, she found her way to the heart of the oil sands, Fort McMurray, and has been here ever since.  She calls YMM home alongside her husband (Brett), stepson (Cameron) & dog (Rolo).  With being a professional pet blogger her passion for being an animal advocate & animal lover has stretched beyond our region reaching all over the world with her blog “Confessions of a Rescue Mom”.  The blog was inspired by her Internet-famous, former shelter dog, Rolo who was adopted from the Fort McMurray SPCA in 2011.  She loves sharing tips & ideas on how to make your pet parent experience perfect!
