The Fort McMurray Boys & Girls Club
The Fort McMurray Boys & Girls Club [FMBGC] Clubhouse has been a safe haven and focal point of positive child and youth engagement in downtown Fort McMurray for 35 years.
We are affiliates of Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada which includes well over 100 clubs across our country and a vast network in the USA. We are a social profit organization as well as a registered charity.
We deliver licensed, accredited and certified for inclusive care of special needs programs for all ages of children and youth [1-17]. Our programs are organized under 3 “banners” relating to various age groups.
Tiny Toes Day Care includes infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers in age appropriate groupings and activities.
ZAP and ZAP+ Out-of-School Care operates before and after school programs, school break camps and summer day camp for children in the K – grade 6 age ranges.
These two child care programs are fee driven. However, financial subsidy is available to qualifying families.
Our Wavelengths youth program banner includes casual athletic drop-in and homework haven during the school year as well as our STRUT performance based expressive arts program on Friday evenings and weekend afternoons. All youth programming is free.
Our output measure is our Member Days in Program [MDIP] statistic which records close to 20,000 child/youth days delivered each year. Over 13,000 nutritious snack meals are served at The Club each school year. Over a typical day, some 115 children and youth will be received at The Club from just under 80 families. The ethnic and cultural diversity of our children/members is exactly in proportion to the overall diversity of our City. Approximately 1/3 of our children come from single parent families. Approximately 40% of our families receive financial subsidy for their program fees.
Throughout each year The Club hosts community events and fundraising initiatives that include: Chateau Boo [Fort McMurray’s Signature Haunted House Experience], Junior Boo [Halloween themed kiddie carnival], The HEROES of Today and Tomorrow school year calendar and beginning in 2016 NAKE … Northern Alberta Kids Expo.
We employ 24 certified child development professionals. We are a United Way Member Agency and receive funding through them. We also receive a small amount of funding from the Regional Municipality’s Community Development Fund. Our primary sources of revenue are program fees and donations.
Our website www.fmbgc.ca is updated regularly and as such a good source of specific information about The Club. We are, as our slogan states “a good place to be” and are so every day.
