The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo Welcomes The 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games

The exciting facilities and reputable amenities with the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) host a variety of sporting events each year, celebrating excellence in sport and experiences in the Wood Buffalo region.  This February the RRC will be adding another exciting tournament to its strong portfolio of sporting events at MacDonald Island Park and in Anzac, participating amongst other great venues in the region as one of the hosting facilities as part of the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games! Working alongside the organizing committee, the RRC is thrilled to have the opportunity to bring teams together from throughout the province. The RRC will be hosting a number of teams competing for gold, while also supporting a number of other celebrations for the Games throughout the weekend of February 16th to 19th.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to support this great initiative, giving our region, our people and the amazing facilities the ability to shine and celebrate sport!” says Rachel Orser, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the RRC. “While working closely with the organizing committee, we continue to bring a new era in sport and event experiences to the region through this opportunity with the Games.”

MacDonald Island Park will be hosting judo, artistic gymnastics, men’s hockey, squash, curling, synchronized swimming and archery at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and Shell Place.  The Anzac Recreation Centre presented by Nexen Energy, a CNOOC Limited Company, will also be hosting badminton and ringette.

In addition to the amenities at MacDonald Island Park supporting the sporting competitions, it will also be the main participant food centre to hundreds of athletes, host athlete and coach celebratory Games parties, the opening ceremonies, cultural crafts and activities, pop up performances, and an guided tour on at the TOTAL Aboriginal Interpretive Trail.

Everyone is encouraged to come cheer on the athletes, enjoy the variety of the amenities, and attend the activities and performances lighting up MacDonald Island Park throughout the Games. To kick-off the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games with high energy on Friday February 16th there will an Opening Ceremony from 7 to 8 pm at the Shell Place Baseball Stadium where there will be a variety of music, dancers and artists participating in the show.

Other free activities to participate in throughout the Games weekend at MacDonald Island Park include the crafts and activities for kids to design their own hockey pucks, partaking in the community art project facilitated by a local artists, enjoying musical and dance performances, and walking on the guided McMurray Metis tour on the TOTAL Aboriginal Interpretive Trail with hot chocolate and Bannock on Sunday February 18th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Our amenities support the needs of our community and provide the ability to support health and wellness amongst our local residents.” says Orser. “We are excited to continue to meet those needs while also working with the community to attract large national and provincial sporting events such as the Games to put our region on the map as an amazing host location.  These hosting opportunities support the region’s growth and economic development by bringing in new revenue streams and providing benefits to local businesses.”

The RRC is excited to help deliver the event and showcase their facilities as everyone welcomes Alberta’s top young athletes, coaches and parents to the region in February!
