HALOS

When it comes to helping community-based causes in Fort McMurray, you don’t need to look any further than a group of new angels who have joined together to form a special group called HALOS.

HALOS, which stands for the Helping Assist Local Organizations Society, coordinates annual events, giving back to our community by donating the proceeds to our local nonprofit organizations. With a mission to support and enhance the efforts of community-based causes, this group lives up to their angelic name!

Comprised of a group committed to giving back to our community, HALOS saw its beginnings after last year’s Kids Forever Banquet, when a desire to help Kids Forever get over their $1-million goal was born.

“We recognized a gap in the Fort McMurray not for profit sector,” shares Debbie Hahn President of HALOS, “where there is not enough funding for the organizations to properly service the needs here. She goes on to explain that because there are so many organizations here that compete for industry, business and individual dollars, it results in a shortfall with some of the smaller groups.

After recruiting a few strong business leaders in the community and hosting one event, they evolved into a registered society that’s making a difference.

“This year the funds are designated to Kids Forever Foundation,” explains Hahn, “to honour John Foy and his group of dedicated individuals for their commitment to our community for the past many years.”

What makes HALOS a unique society is the flexibility it has in the type of fundraising it does, such as this year’s Ebony & Ivory Dueling Pianos to perhaps a raffle or even a marathon in future years. As well, the Society isn’t obligated to support the same organization year after year; they are able to direct proceeds in a fresh direction according to the needs of the community.

Sponsors play a large role in HALOS’ success, as Hahn explains. “We would like to thank HVAC Solutions and Brad Lucier for coming forward as our Presenting Sponsor this year. It is through the commitment of our local businesses like HVAC Solutions that make our community truly special…a cut above the rest.”
