Now that Spring has officially arrived in Wood Buffalo, everyone in the family will be ready to get up and out of the house to enjoy the warmer weather and all that the region has to offer. The community can always count on plenty of exciting spring and summer events planned at MacDonald Island Park, and 2019 is no exception with an incredible line-up of events for all ages. Take in the music at the Summer Sounds FM Concert Series, celebrate with the community at Canada Day, cross the finish line at the Fort McMurray Marathon, and so much more!

Summer Sounds FM Concert Series

In its second year, Fort McMurray’s 2019 Summer Sounds Concert Series will welcome three iconic chart-topping artists who have rocked stages all across the globe. Carrie Underwood kicks-off the Series with what is sure to be an unforgettable live music experience. The internationally acclaimed superstar will bring her Cry Pretty Tour to Shell Place on May 30th with special guests Maddie & Tae and Runaway June.

Carrie Underwood emerged from the promise of her 2005 American Idol win to become a true multi-format, multi-media superstar, spanning achievements in music, television, and film. A seven-time GRAMMY® Award winner, she has sold 64 million records worldwide and recorded 26 #1 singles, 13 of which she co-wrote. Carrie released her sixth studio album, Cry Pretty, on September 14 on Capitol Records. The album debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Top Country Album Charts and is the biggest all-genre debut by a female in 2018.

Canada Day

Each year the community gathers together to celebrate Canada Day at MacDonald Island Park. The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC), in collaboration with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), welcomes approximately 5,000 attendees to this event annually.

The little ones can look forward to a craft carnival, bouncy castles, and children’s entertainment. While the kids at heart will enjoy live music, beer gardens, festive food and more. When the day comes to an end, celebrate by taking in the Grand Finale Fireworks!

Summer Sounds FM Concert Series

Nickelback is packing up their rock show and bringing it to Fort McMurray, and this will be a show not to miss! Taking place at SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place, this will be a night to remember with Canada’s most iconic rock band. From “How You Remind Me” to “Feed the Machine” Fort McMurray music fans will get to take in all of Nickelback’s biggest hits and newest singles. As if it couldn’t get better, Hamilton rockers Monster Truck, will open up this awesome show.

Since forming in Hanna Alberta in 1995, these Alberta boys have been globally celebrated, and diamond-certified. They were also named Billboard Magazine’s Top Group of the last decade. Nickelback’s success includes 9 studio albums that sold more than 50+ million copies, solidifying their status as the “eleventh best-selling music act.” Did you know that Nickelback is the second best-selling foreign act in the U.S.? It’s true, they are only second to The Beatles.

Summer Sounds FM Concert Series

Just when you thought you couldn’t rock out any harder than you did with Nickelback, you’ll be back at SMS Equipment Stadium for another unreal concert! The Summer Sounds FM Concert Series closes July 13th with Canadian legend, Bryan Adams. This concert will be the experience of a lifetime in your own backyard. Bryan Adams will be joined by special guest Sloan, you won’t want to miss this event!

As one of the most highly acclaimed singer/songwriters, Bryan Adams is known for hit singles (Everything I Do) I Do It For You, Summer Of ’69 and his Rod Stewart and Sting collaboration All for Love. The Grammy winning artist has seen success from a string of number 1’s in over 40 countries and has sold an excess of 65 million records worldwide. His thirst for performing and unique take on live concerts have established him as one of the world’s best rock singers of our time.

Fort McMurray Marathon

This year the Fort McMurray Marathon will take place on Sunday, September 15th. Marathon participants, volunteers and spectators alike will descend on MacDonald Island Park for a race day full of festivities including music, food, awards and family fun. Over the past six years, this popular event has received tremendous support with a growing base of dedicated runners helping pave the way to a full marathon in 2018.

Race options are as follows: full marathon (42.2km), half marathon (21.1km), 10km, 5km, 3km and a kid’s fun run.

More details will be released in the weeks and months to come, including route announcements and great new runner experience additions to the 2019 event. Stay tuned!
