Canstruction - Kick Hunger
The first Annual Heavy North Canstruction® Design and Build Competition to benefit the Wood Buffalo food Bank Association will be held in August 2015 in coordination with the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games. There will be teams consisting of architects, engineers, contractors, and designers along with their co-workers, friends, and colleagues, designing and CANSTRUCTING sculptures made solely from full canned goods, with the labels of said cans as their only form of paint and color. This event is meant to provide a new and innovative way to raise food and awareness about food banks and the need for support of food banks. This year our teams will be building sculptures with the theme of “GAME ON” with all builds using 2015 Western Canada Summer Games Wood Buffalo as their source of inspiration.
Canstruction® is a unique charity which hosts competitions, exhibitions and events showcasing colossal structures made entirely out of full cans of food. After the structures are built, the cansculptures® go on display to the public as a giant art exhibition. At the end of the event, all food is donated to local hunger relief organizations. Recognized for their commitment to innovation, hunger relief and collaboration, their work has helped raise over 25 million pounds of food since 1992. Canstruction® events are held annually in over 150 cities around the world including North America, Australia, South America, Europe and Asia.
Canstruction® Fort McMurray will be taking place on August 3rd- August 6th each team will have 12 hours to build their structure at the Suncor leisure Center: MacDonald Island Park – Curling Rink. Competing teams are responsible for obtaining their own supply of canned goods, they may secure sponsorship to assist them with food acquisition. Save On Foods is our partnering grocery store and a 15 per cent discount will be applied to all Canstruction purchases!
The judging will commence at 2:00 p.m. on Friday August 7th, 2015. Competition decisions are left in the hands of the jury; and the viewing public for the people’s choice award. There will be six awards to be given in the following categories:
- Best Meal
- Best Use of Labels
- Structural Ingenuity
- People’s Choice
- Juror’s Choice
- Honourable Mention
Awards will be handed out during the evening of August 15, 2015, details to be announced at a later date. Local winners will be entered into the international competition via digital entry. In hopes of being one of the international winners for 2015/2016 events.
De-Canstruction® will take place on August 16th- 20th, 2015. Each entry must be taken down and placed in the designated holding area for pick-up by the Wood Buffalo Food Bank.
The Wood Buffalo Food Bank is excited to bring this new and innovative approach to food raising to our region and we cannot wait to see all the amazing works of art our local teams create. Canstruction® is truly a new way to engage a different population in food raising and art.
