Anzac Recreation Centre

2018 AWG Host to Badminton & Ringette
Located on the western shore of Willow Lake in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Anzac is a hamlet of approximately 800 people. The Anzac Recreation Centre is a 112,000 square-foot facility and includes a fitness centre, indoor running track, an NHL-sized arena, field house, boardroom and other children/youth spaces and amenities. It was opened to the public on March 3, 2014 and was one of the host venues for the 2015 Canadian Ringette Championships.
*Anzac is approximately 36 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray located on Highway 881, along the east shore of Gregoire Lake.
Birchwood Trails

2018 AWG Host to Cross-Country Skiing
The Birchwood Trails is a network of more than 130 kilometres of maintained wooded trails located in Thickwood Heights. In the summer, residents use the trails for running and mountain biking and for cross-country skiing in the winter. The trails accommodate both classic and skate styles of cross-country skiing. It offers three official circuits of 5, 8 and 13-kilometre-long loops.
* Public access to the Birchwood Trails main entrance is available near 165 Tamarack Way in Thickwood, which can be found close to Frank Spragins High School.
Casman Centre

2018 AWG Host to Female Hockey
Located in Thickwood Heights, the recently renovated Casman Centre is home to Fort McMurray’s Alberta Junior Hockey League - The Oil Barons. The facility includes a 1,537-seat arena, multi-purpose room, amphitheatre and pottery guild. In the past, the Centre has hosted the 2004 Arctic Winter Games, the 2000 Doyle and Royal Bank Cups, the 2011 World Junior Red and White Game and the 2015 Canadian Ringette Championships.
* Thickwood Heights, also called Thickwood, is the second largest neighbourhood in Fort McMurray. Highway 63 runs along the northeastern edge of this neighbourhood.

2018 AWG Host to Fencing
Father Mercredi Community High School is home to the Fort McMurray Trappers. The school offers its students prolific educational opportunities with its sports academy programs. The six academies include baseball, hockey, soccer, cheerleading, golf and swimming. The high school features a gymnasium, an outdoor track and an in-field semi-equipped for football and rugby. The outdoor football field has a capacity for 233 spectators.
* Father Mercredi Community High School is in close to proximity to the Casman Centre in Thickwood.
Fort McKay Arena

2018 AWG Host to Speed Skating
The Fort McKay Arena is the community’s home for broomball, curling, figure skating, hockey and ringette during the winter. Through the spring and summer, the ice is removed from the arena to serve as a multi-purpose venue for other sport and community events. A concession and in-house skate sharpening services are available.
* Fort McKay is located approximately 55 kilometres north of Fort McMurray on Highway 63.
Fort McMurray Shooting Range

2018 AWG Host to Biathlon
Operated by the Fort McMurray Fish and Game Club, the Fort McMurray Shooting Range offers a full trap and skeet field, full biathlon course and target field, a primitive trail walk, multiple handgun bays, an enclosed shooting shack, an indoor 25-yard range for handguns, 22 Rimfire rifles, archery and airguns, as well as a clubhouse with a capacity of 120 people, which includes a full kitchen.
* The Fort McMurray Shooting Range is located 13 kilometres south of Highway 63 and 69 junctions on Highway 63 South.
Frank Lacroix Arena

2018 AWG Host to Figure Skating & Ringette
Located in Beacon Hill, the Frank Lacroix arena is home base for many of Fort McMurray’s minor hockey league athletes. Operated by the Fort McMurray Minor Hockey Association, the arena features a 190-foot by 85-foot ice surface, along with a multipurpose room with kitchen. Skate sharpening services are available during hockey season.
* The Beacon Hill neighbourhood is located at the top of Fort McMurray. It was one of the neighbourhoods impacted by the 2016 Wildfire and is currently in its rebuilding phases.
Shell Place + Suncor Community Leisure Centre

Located on MacDonald Island, the Shell Place and Suncor Community Leisure Centre are home to Fort McMurray’s world-class sports facilities. The leisure centre includes four separate fields of play, racquet ball and squash courts, an indoor running track, a fitness centre, an indoor climbing wall, an indoor playground, a dance academy, a public library and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The Shell Place is also a multi-amenity facility with a state-of-the-art full-size artificial turf field and an indoor turf field house.
* MacDonald Island Park is Canada’s largest community recreation, leisure and social centre.
Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre

2018 AWG Host to Volleyball & Wrestling
Located on the grounds of Keyano College, the Syncrude Sports & Wellness Centre is the home to Keyano’s college athletes – The Huskies; which includes men and women teams of basketball, futsal, soccer and volleyball. The facility includes a 15,000-square foot gymnasium, which converts into a turfed playing filed. It also includes a 6,500-square foot fitness centre.
* The Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre was first opened to the public in September 2007.
Vista Ridge – All Seasons Park

2018 AWG Host to Alpine Skiing, Freestyle Skiing & Freestyle Snowboarding
Vista Ridge – All Seasons Park is tagged as ‘the best non-mountain winter recreation in Alberta’. Vista Ridge offers eight trails on 60 skiable acres with an additional tube park and a 500-seated lodge, which sits at the top of the 375m summit. From June to September, guests take advantage of the family-friendly Aerial Adventure Park & Mini-Putt.
* Vista Ridge is located outside of Fort McMurray and a 13-minute drive from the Airport Road turnoff, past the YMM International Airport.
Westwood Public High School

2018 AWG Host to Boxing
Westwood Community High School is home to the Fort McMurray Trojans. The Trojans have won many regional and provincial zones tournaments. The sports teams include basketball, soccer, football, volleyball, badminton and gold. The grounds of Westwood include a rugby field and a softball diamond. It is located next door to the Westwood Family YMCA in Thickwood.
* Westwood Community High School is the only high school in Fort McMurray that currently offers Advanced Placement courses.
