DON SCOTT

Profession: Lawyer • Age: 49 • Years in Wood Buffalo: 16

49-year-old Don Scott has established himself as a well-respected resident of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, with good reason. He is an active community member, is a Board member with the United Way, and previously served as the President. He also owns and manages Don Scott McMurray Law Office, a well-known law practice in town known for giving back to the community it serves.

Don recently served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, and was the Associate Minister of Transparency and Transformation. He then went on to serve as the Minister of Innovation and Advanced Education.

After completing law school, Don clerked with the Court of Appeal in New Brunswick. After being called to the bar, he went on to pursue an LL.M. (Masters of Law) from the University of Cambridge in England. While studying in Cambridge, Don worked as the assistant solicitor to the Bloody Sunday Inquiry in London, and continued to work in that position after completing is LL.M.

After finishing his work with the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, Don came to Fort McMurray and joined a law firm. In 2006, he ventured out on his own and started his own practice, and later served as a Bencher for the Law Society of Alberta.

The opportunity to help others is what really connects Don to Wood Buffalo. In addition to his volunteer work on the United Way Board, Don also sits on the board of the Fort McMurray Legion. He is an avid badminton player, and enjoys hiking, basketball and fly-fishing.

He is a proud father to two young girls, Jeya and Jenna, and husband to local music teacher, Janey. As a resident who serves has not only served, and continues to serve, his community, Don’s service to not only Fort McMurray but also the province of Alberta is just another reason why he’s one of Your McMurray Magazine’s Top 50 under 50.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: “A quote I live by is from Winston Churchill: ‘You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.’”
