JOANNE ANGEL

Profession: Executive Director, Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of Wood Buffalo
Age: 34 • Years in Wood Buffalo: 10

34-year-old Joanne Angel was born and raised in Labrador City. She moved to St. John’s to attend University, and graduated with a degree in Social Work in 2006. At the time she had two work placements completed - one with Victim Services in St. John’s, and the other with a not-for-profit in England called Real Life Trust, where she worked with individuals with persistent mental health concerns.

As Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of Wood Buffalo, Joanne stays very busy with everything from policy management through to media relations, and everything in between.

Joanne volunteers as Treasurer of the Community Network Association Board of Directors, Secretary on the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors, Director on the Youth Justice Committee board, An officer with 868 YMM Rotary Northstar Air Cadet Squadron, volunteer with the Fort McMurray SPCA, and volunteer at other community events that happen throughout the year.

Joanne is engaged to be married to her fiance, Taras Andrusiv, and lives with their two amazing cats, Dexter and Socks. When she isn’t working, or volunteering her time, Joanne enjoys playing volleyball, travelling, crafting, running, and swimming. She has also been learning about mechanics and fixing cars from Taras, as well Ukrainian culture and language.

Subscribing to the idea that leadership is the art of influencing human behaviour, Joanne is perfectly suited as one of YMM’s Top 50 Under 50. Her dedication to Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the time she dedicates to making our community a better place, is commendable.

IN HER OWN WORDS: “I love the people here, and since many people move out here away from family and friends, people are so welcoming - and you end up building your own family here. It’s great to be a part of something like that.”
