Christina - Profession: Executive Chef, Quality Inn and Conference Centre
Age: 37 • Years in Wood Buffalo: 7

Power couple status: Ken and Christina have been named one of YMM’s Power Couples because of their willingness to use their time and talents to benefit the community. Leaving little time for themselves, they are committed to making Wood Buffalo a great place to call home.

45-year-old Ken Bowie is more than just someone who knows his way around the kitchen, though he is well-known for his time as Executive Sous Chef at Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre, and Executive Chef at the Best Western Plus Sawridge Suites and now as Executive Chef for the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo. He is a dedicated community member who gives freely of his time and expertise as a volunteer.

Through service to organizations such as the Wood Buffalo Food Bank, and Centre of Hope, Ken has developed a following not only on his ability to make hot food, but also on his generosity and kindness to those in need in the Wood Buffalo Region.

Ken has volunteered his time with the Arts Council Wood Buffalo, Fort McMurray Chefs and Cooks Association, the Events Committee for the Multicultural Society of Wood Buffalo, the Northern Lights NA, and YMM Young Urban Professionals.

When not working, or volunteering his time, Ken enjoys doing anything outdoorsy.

Since the age of 15, Christina Bowie, now 37-years-old has been building her chef’s skills, and is now the newest Executive Chef for the Quality Inn and Conference Centre Fort McMurray.

After the wildfires this year, Christina returned to town with a small team of seven (including husband Ken of course). It was at the Best Western Plus Sawridge Suites where she, together with Ken and the team, helped feed and house the Fort McMurray Fire Department...an experience she will never forget.

With such a busy life, downtime is rare. But when she does get a day to herself, Christina loves to volunteer with local nonprofit organizations and spends some personal time working out and enjoying local boxing classes.

Among Christina’s favourite things about living in Wood Buffalo are the people, the sense of community and the willingness to help each other.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: “I make food hot!”

IN HER OWN WORDS: “Three ideas I subscribe to are: Be the best version of you; don’t compare yourself to your neighbour; and we learn from our failures, not from our success.”
