(1 Vote)

After a long northern Alberta winter, it’s safe to say that things are heating up…especially in and around Fort McMurray! There are some seriously fantastic events coming up in our community.

Shell Place Grand Opening: with bonus Guinness World Record attempt for Most Participants in a Ribbon Cutting! Come out and be a part of the fun on June 12!

Northern Kickoff: SMS Stadium at Shell Place will be hosting the 2015 Northern Kickoff presented by Shell Albian Sands on June 13. This CFL pre-season game, scheduled as a ‘home’ game for the Edmonton Eskimos, will be an event to remember as they go up against the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Don’t forget to bring your non-perishable food items to all Northern Kickoff events, and help the Wood Buffalo Food Bank in their Kick Hunger Campaign, which aims to raise $25,000 in cash, and 25,000 lbs. of food donations in 2015!

Wildplay Wood Buffalo: The art of monkeying around has been found in Fort McMurray! Kids, teens and adults will all love this unique, nature-based, fun way to keep active! Climb, zip, jump and swing through the tree-tops at Vista Ridge, where multi-level platforms hover two to twelve meters above ground! For more information, visit www.wildplay.com/parks/woodbuffalo.

FC Edmonton Pro Soccer Club presents the 2015 Wood Buffalo Cup: FC Soccer will take the field with the San Antonio Scorpions on July 5 at SMS Stadium at Shell Place. One match not enough for you? FC Edmonton will be taking on Ottawa Fury on August 2! Visit www.fcedmonton.com/fort-mcmurray-tickets for more information!

Camping in Wood Buffalo: There’s no better way to experience the beauty of northern Alberta’s scenery than while camping! Summer days are long up here, and the view of the lakes, forests, and Northern Lights will mean an experience you won’t forget!

Western Canada Summer Games 2015 Wood Buffalo: You’re not going to want to miss the largest multi-sport event to be hosted in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo from August 7 through the 16th. With 18 sports, 2015 Wood Buffalo will bring over 2,500 athletes to our community from Canada’s four western provinces and three northern territories.

Marine Park Museum at Heritage Park: Situated along the Clearwater River in Fort McMurray’s lower town site on Clearwater Drive, this is only shipyard remaining in all of Alberta! The Marine Park showcases five ships which tell the story of northern river transportation. This unique family destination includes historical exhibitions, a playground, and beautiful grounds…perfect for a picnic!

Aerosmith: The Nexen Stage at Shell Place will be rocking on July 19th when Aerosmith brings their Blue Army Tour 2015 to town! With seats ranging in price from $89 to $199, this is a show you’re not going to want to miss!

The Athabasca Dunes Ecological Reserve: Alberta’s moving desert is the perfect place for nature-based outdoor recreation and adventure. The impressive sand dunes (which shift up to 1.5 meters per year), coupled with the surrounding landscape of forests, lakes and marshes make Alberta’s Sahara an exciting sight to see!

Sprayparks: As the weather gets warmer, the sight of sprayparks around town becomes more and more welcome! You’ll find them in the areas of: Grayling Terrace Park, Lakewood Park (in Timberlea), J. Howard Pew Park (in Waterways), Wood Buffalo Park, and Beacon Hill Spray Park.

Oil Sands Discovery Centre: The school year may be winding down, but that’s no reason to stop learning! The Oil Sands Discovery Centre is all about public awareness and increasing knowledge about the oil sands, with a special emphasis on fun for the kids! Admission includes demonstrations, films and more.

Eat & Drink in Wood Buffalo: Sip on trendy cocktails and eat some casual tapas on the patio at Atmosfere Restaurant or for a special occasion try a Chef’s Tasting Menu, located at 104-9925 Biggs Avenue. Watch the golfers come in after a round of golf at one the clubhouses, Fox’s Den at MacIsland or Wood Buffalo Golf Course.
